Uyo Local Government Legislative Council Passes Revenue Harmonisation Bills

The 7th Uyo Local Government Legislative Council has passed bills that seek to harmonise the collection of all revenues due to the local government area after the third reading at Thursday’s plenary.

The revenue include taxes, levies, rates, fees, charges, among others.

The bills numbering 17 which cut across the economic and social activities in Uyo local government area would become a Revenue Bye-law of the local government that binds on all the business operators within the capital city of Akwa Ibom State when signed into law by the Executive Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo.

The Revenue Bye-law shall provide the Local Government with a legal framework for effective and enhanced revenue generation activities following the dwindling financial fortunes of the local government from the federation account.

The Leader of the Legislative Council/Councillor representing Etoi 1, Ward 4, Hon. Ubong Effiong announced the passage of the bills after the councillors adopted the re-introductory report of the bills as presented by the Committee on Business, Rules, Ethics and Privileges chaired by the Deputy Leader, Hon. Mmenyene-Abasi Okon, representing Oku 3, ward 14 in a motion moved by Hon.

Hillary Udi, representing Offot 1, ward 7 and seconded by the Deputy House Leader, Hon. Emem Uduak, representing Uyo Urban ward 2.

Hon. Effiong appreciated members of the committee, Honourable Councillors, Civil Society Organisations and members of the public for their contributions toward the successful passage of the bills and restated the determination of the 7th Uyo Legislative Council to work assiduously toward a better life for every Uyo resident.

The Leader directed clerk of the legislative council, Ekpenyong Ekpenyong Esq to communicate the resolution of the house and send the Bye-law to the Executive Chairman for his assent.

Recall that the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo had, on January 5, 2021 sent the draft bills to the legislature for consideration.

During the public hearing on the bills, the Executive Chairman promised to implement the Bye-law for the overall good of indigenes and residents of Uyo while also pledging his commitment at ensuring that revenues generated are judiciously utilised towards the growth and development of the local government.
