How Suspected phone thief escaped death in Uyo
A man in his 20s in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, escaped being put to death after allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a betting shop along Abak Road.
Photos and video shared on Facebook showed people beating and kicking the suspect who was covered in blood, even as he pleaded for mercy.
Akwa Ibom, of recent, has seen an increasing case of mob justice despite the police warning residents not to take laws into their own hands.
The suspected thief was stripped, with a tyre and fuelled handy, but was saved by some people, including one Victor Raymond who shared some of the images on social media.
The eyewitness said: “After being a victim of domestic theft and robbery for 3 times in 3 years where I lost 4 laptops in the 3 occasions, an ipad, 4 phones, and 1 plasma TV and some money. I have also been robbed in my shop where I lost another plasma and a generator. After all these, I had sworn that the day I will see a mob on a thief that I will personally set fire on him.
“The day came today.
“He stole a phone from a bet Naija shop at Abak road close to mechanic village and was caught.
“Lying in his pool of blood he beckoned at me to help him. Up to 10 or more bottles were broken on his head already and he was lain on the floor hopelessly and anticipating another round of attack. He was stoned, maimed, beaten to stupor with all manner of things and blood was gushing out everywhere on his head.
“Immediately there was tire and fuel cos it was closer to a filling station. Mehnnnn !! I was stunned and couldn’t raise a finger cos it’s my first time, I knew if I didn’t do something in 2 minutes he’d be a goner.
“Then I started begging and suggested he should be handed over to the police. To make it short, I can’t tell the exact words I said that made them listen to me. And God rescued him.
“I believe God decided to give him a second chance. The funny part is that this went on for more than 45minutes yet there was no sight of the police anywhere.
“Some people may disagree, but jungle Justice is wrong.
“If you are there reading this and you know you indulge in this kind of lifestyle. You better desist from it because you may not have a saving grace on your own day. That’s how you will die for nothing.”
