Shocking – The American Woman Who Married Her Daughter & Son !

On March 26, 2016, 42-year-old Patricia Spann married her 25-year-old daughter, Misty Dawn. Misty’s paternal grandmother adopted her – along with her two brothers, Cody and Jody – at a young age when social services revoked Spann’s parental custody. The children had not knowingly seen their mother since childhood.

When Spann and Misty reconnected in 2014, they claimed that they simply “hit it off” and married in a neighboring county. Authorities in Duncan eventually arrested and charged both women because it is illegal to pursue electral love, or love between family members, in the state of Oklahoma.

Spann Lost Custody Of Her Children When They Were Young
Spann lost custody of all three children from her previous marriage when they were young. In 2001, the father, James D. Spann, reportedly passed. The children’s paternal grandmother adopted and raised Jody, Misty, and Cody. The children’s birth certificates were amended to list their grandmother as their mother.

However, the exact reason why Spann lost custody of her children is unreported, although Spann gave birth to Misty when she was approximately 17 years old.

Spann Convinced Misty That The Union Was Legal
The fact that Spann’s name was removed from Misty’s birth certificate after the adoption is the loophole that allowed the mother and daughter to obtain a marriage license. Reportedly, Spann went to great lengths to convince Misty that the union was legal, reassuring Misty that she had looked into the laws and consulted various lawyers about it.

Since Misty and her siblings’ grandmother raised them after a formal adoption, Misty’s birth certificate was altered to list her as the birth mother. Spann contended this technicality was enough to warrant a same-sex union between her and her daughter, and she encouraged Misty to move forward with the plan. At the time of their marriage, Spann used a different surname, “Clayton,” which also attributed to how they were able to wed.

In 2008, Spann Tricked One Of Her Biological Sons Into Marriage
Spann was in a previous marriage with one of her two sons, then 18-year-old Jody Spann Jr. Reportedly, Jody filed for an annulment in 2010, approximately 15 months after the marriage, citing that he unintentionally married his biological mother. While Misty Dawn was aware that Spann was her biological mother, Jody reportedly did not know when he accepted the union, as Spann did not introduce herself as the mother to her estranged children.

Spann claimed the relationship was not sexual and that she was trying to protect him from being deployed into military service – Jody had joined the US Army Reserve as a teen. Jody’s brother, Cody, maintained that Spann “threatened” Jody when he decided to annul the marriage after the discovery. Following the annulment, Oklahoma authorities did not press charges, and Jody has subsequently avoided the media.

Spann Allegedly Tried To Pressure Her Second Son Into A Relationship
Cody Spann, Patricia’s third child, is the only Spann sibling who has spoken publicly about his mother’s actions. He claims that she manipulated his siblings into the marriages and that the estranged mother also tried to marry him as well:

She only tried it once, and I told her to get lost. I would never be with my biological mom. That is disgusting. I came from that woman.

In an interview with an Oklahoma news station, Cody contended that Spann “forced” Misty Dawn into the nuptial arrangement. Spann later admitted she initiated the union because she wanted to adopt a child. Cody is adamant that his biological mother is a “predator.”

A Child Services Visit Exposed The Illegal Marriage
In August 2016, the Department of Human Services was investigating the Spann home when a child welfare official unintentionally discovered the marriage between Misty and her mother. It’s a crime in Oklahoma to marry a close family member, regardless of the nature of the relationship. Duncan authorities arrested the two women that September on incest charges. Both were held on $10,000 bail.

The courts later granted Misty Dawn an annulment in October 2017, as she had filed on the basis of fraud.

Cody Spann Claims Patricia Preyed On The Fact That Her Children Wanted A Mother
Cody maintains that he and his older siblings were taken advantage of, as the children had been estranged from their biological mother at an early age. He publicly denounced his mother’s behavior, yet Cody says he receives negative comments and backlash from the outside world on Facebook and other social media outlets.

Cody explained that the blame should be placed on Spann, who introduced herself to the children in 2007 but did not reveal her relation to them. This is how Jody inadvertently wed his mother. The youngest Spann addressed KSWO, an Oklahoma news station:

Did she take advantage of the fact that we found her and actually wanted to be a part of her life? Yeah, she did. She took big advantage of it. It could have been, ‘Look we reunited you with your kids, be in your kids’ lives,’ but no, she wants to be with her kids [romantically]. That is sick.

At 26, Misty Dawn Spann initially pled guilty to charges of being involved in an intrafamilial marriage. After her September 2016 arrest, she filed for an annulment, citing that Spann had fraudulently obtained her consent to wed.

Because the court is suspicious that Spann actually pressured Misty into the marriage, Misty faces 10 years of probation after receiving a deferred sentence in her plea deal. Misty must return to court in 10 years to reassess the status of her case before the probation is dropped and will face jail time if she violates the terms of her probation.

Intrafamilial Relationships Are A Serious Offense In Oklahoma, Whether Sexual Or Not

Spann and her biological daughter’s union, whether sexual or not, is considered a crime in the state of Oklahoma. Being involved in an intrafamilial relationship in Oklahoma is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Spann and Misty wed in 2016, after the state passed legislation sanctioning same-sex marriages. Spann’s previous marriage to son Jody in 2008 didn’t come to police attention until the later investigation, so Spann never faced charges for the union.

Spann went to court in January 2018 to face trial. Oklahoma authorities, as well as Spann’s son Cody, believed Spann was to blame for both the intrafamilial marriages. Duncan police officer Dustin Smith told local news channel KSWO: “Based on what I’ve seen in the investigation I think it is very plausible that the children of Patricia were both manipulated.”

Part of Misty’s plea deal was based on the fact that she filed for her annulment “by reason of illegality and fraud” – i.e., on the basis that her mother tricked her into thinking the marriage was legal.

Spann Pled Guilty To Charges Of Felony Incest
Legal proceedings began in January 2018, but they weren’t settled until March of that year. Spann pled guilty to felony incest and took the court’s plea deal. She was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by eight years of probation.

Upon her release, she’ll have to register as a sex offender.
