Stalemate Edit

An edit of “Stalemate” is also out today digitall. On the track, using a combination of Broken English and Yoruba, Fela muses briefly on the face-off between Nigeria’s military regime and the social groups who made up the bulk of his audience: students, intellectuals and sufferheads (as he called the urban working class), over one of the more laid-back grooves in his entire catalog.

Fela Kuti: The Legacy

A new short documentary on the life and work of Fela is also available to watch today. The documentary, directed by Kayode Thomas, sheds light on Fela’s influence on fashion, style, and culture as well as his message and activism. It also examines the significance of the Shrine, the iconic music venue where Fela performed.

Fela Kuti: The Legacy features interviews with Mádé Kuti, Fela’s grandson; Sandra Izsadore, humanitarian, author, and friend of Fela; Dele Sosimi, musician; Lemi Ghariokwu, artist; Jeff Jarratt, record producer; Rikki Stein, friend and manager; Chris May, Afrobeat historian and author; Miles Showell, mastering engineer; Sodi Marciszewer, record producer.
