Today, October 19, 2023, marks the 37th anniversary of the assassination of Dele Giwa, a Nigerian journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine. Giwa was killed by a letter bomb at his home in Lagos, Nigeria, two days after he had been interviewed by State Security Service (SSS) officials. His assassination was a major blow to press freedom in Nigeria and remains unsolved to this day.

Giwa was a fearless and outspoken journalist who was known for his investigative reporting and his criticism of the Nigerian government. He was also a mentor and role model to many other journalists. His death was a major loss to the Nigerian media and to the country as a whole.
