No fewer than three (3) honourable councillors of the sixth legislative council (2017-2020) in Akwa Ibom State are struggling to breathe in different hospitals across the state.
Two are from Eket senatorial district while one is from Ikot Ekpene senatorial district.
Narrating their predicaments to their colleagues that visited them in the hospitals, they regretted their sacrifice and commitment they showed during 2019 elections, expressing that they were standing firm to return the governor for second term in office thinking that they would be well taken care of after the elections.
One of them stated that never in history of democracy in Akwa Ibom State a councillor could be democratically elected into office without collecting his/her furniture allowance, full salary as it is written in the guidelines, ward constituency projects, full impress, full legislative upkeep, full security vote and severance gratuity after leaving office.
Another who is receiving treatment in a herbal home appeal to the government to pay him his severance gratuity so that he can undergo surgery in the hospital, “I had this ailment while in office and the salary I received while in office I used it to further my Master program with University of Calabar, supporting of free and compulsory education of the governor by sowing school uniforms and printing of exercise books to pupils and students, I also started a three bedroom flat building at my father’s compound and up till date it is uncompleted because of non payment of my furniture allowance while in office, record me very well, what could stop the governor from paying us our severance gratuity? knowing fully well that we didn’t received full salaries while in office, I’m not happy the way governor is giving deaf hear to our plights even when several letters has been submitted to him, whether he hears my voice or not one day what he never expect will take place in this state by immediate past councillors of our set” he said.
Some of their colleagues accuse their forum chairman Hon (Barr) Bassey Bassey of sabotaging them just for his personal self aggrandisement, pleading with the governor to come to their aide so that most of their colleagues can afford hospital bills and children school fees.
