A Profile Of Dr. Glory Edet
Dr. Glory Edet is the Commissioner for Agriculture, a Nigerian advocate for women and Child Rights.
An Agricultural Economist and a Lecturer by profession. She was born at St. Theresa’s Hospital, Use Abat, Akwa Ibom State to disciplined Teachers; Chief and Mrs. Okon Akankpo both from Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Before Dr. Glory Edet’s appointment as the Honourable Commissioner in 2013, she had been a Lecturer in the University of Uyo, Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension since July 2005.
Dr. Glory Edet obtained the following certificates;
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Resource and Environmental Economics in 2012 from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike;
Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Economics (Ph.D Grade) in 2006 from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan;
Bachelor of Agriculture (Agricultural Economics and Extension) Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in 2003 from the University of Uyo;
Certificate of Proficiency (UMITT), AfriHUB Nigeria Limited in 2009;
By God’s grace, Dr Edet was the best graduating student in her Department and Faculty in her set during her first degree. She is the first female Commissioner for Agriculture since the creation of Akwa Ibom State. As at today, she had been the longest serving Commissioner in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. Due to her commitment and hard work, she has served the Government of Akwa Ibom State since 2013 as follows:
(a) Dean, College of Honourable Commissioners and Special Advisers, 2015 till date.
(b) Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare 2013 – 2019.
(c) Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture and Women Affairs, July 2019 – 3rd August, 2020.
(d) Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture 4th August, 2020 till date.
(e) Supervising Commissioner, Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Industry from 31st July, 2017 – 4th October, 2018
(f) Member, Technical Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency, 2019 till date.
(g) Member, Agriculture Investment Committee, 2019 till date.
(h) Member, Akwa Ibom Post COVID -19 Economic Reconstruction Implementation Committee 2020.
(i) Member, Akwa Ibom Post COVID-19 Economic Reconstruction Committee, 2020
(j) Chairperson of all female appointees in Akwa Ibom
She is a member of many professional bodies including: Member, Nigerian Economic Society of Nigeria (NES); Member, University Women Association (UWA), University of Uyo Chapter; Member, Nigerian Agricultural Economics Society of Nigeria (NAES); Member, Gender Affirmative Action Group, Akwa Ibom State, etc.
She has received over 50 awards and distinctions. Dr. Glory Edet as a very hardworking academic has published over fifty (50) Journal articles in both National and International Journals and presented over Thirty (30) conference papers all in Conference Proceedings and some book chapters. Also to her credit, she has attended several workshops and seminars.
She is a Christian, a good mobilizer, a focused person who respects constituted authorities. Dr. Edet is a Deaconess and a Sunday School Teacher. She loves reading and singing. Wherever she is given any office of responsibility, she likes to be remembered for hard work, success, simplicity, discipline and God fearing.
