WHY LIVE A LIFE FILLED WITH PAIN WHEN IT CAN BE AVOIDED?

A patient in an ICU, with tons of machines attached to him, A cannula inserted through his Vein, sometimes on oxygen tanks, other times having blood transfusions, wincing and crying out of pain. This is the reality of a sickle cell patient .

Growing up I’ve watched my brother cry out of pain, I’ve known days he yearned to be free from his pain, My brother died in 2019 but his isn’t a lone story, it’s a story of many

According to a research, Nigeria is currently regarded as the global epicentre of sickle cell anaemia, with an Annual birth of 100-000- 150,000 yearly( 30% of the annual global sickle cell rate) together we can end this statistics

Why do we need to take action?

Sickle cell anaemia is a health crisis right Now and we need to take action

Sickle cell disease poses significant challenges to the global population health. It contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality in paediatric and adult population
It accounts for 20% of neonatal mortality and 5% of mortality of under-5 children in the African continent
About 50 per cent–80 per cent of the estimated 150,000 infants born yearly with SCD in Nigeria die before the age of five years and those that manage to survive suffer end-organs damage which shortens their lifespan including stroke
There’s high physical, emotional and psychological burden on sickle cell patients
Someone living with sickle cell constantly oscillates between intense pain and little doses of healthy thereby reducing the Quality of life
A sickle cell patient misses out on a lot of activities in his life as he constantly fights his pain, unscheduled crisis and the anxiety of not knowing when next he’ll be in pain
There’s constant bullying and stigma shown towards patients living with sickle cell anemia
There is a high financial burden of the people living with sickle cell anaemia and their families, majority of them cannot afford basic medical care.
My demands ?
Despite Nigeria having the highest prevalent rate of sickle cell anaemia, our government is doing little to nothing to end its prevalence.

I am currently campaigning for enactment of a law that makes premarital genotype compatibility test compulsory before marriage.
Ensuring no wedding is officiated without a genotype compatibility test
Ensuring various legal sanctions, repercussions and consequences for violating the law and having a marriage without a genotype compatibility test
I can’t do this alone and I need your help. Together we can end the scourge of sickle cell anaemia in Nigeria, creating a sickle cell free society.
