This is social media where every hurt is spread across nations and continents in spit seconds.
A serious damage has been done to the Art Community by a miscreant and Street Urchin, who calls himself MC Mbakara on social media.
People will start looking down on artists, trained or untrained, as cheap hustlers hereafter; not as invincible pundits plying their divine trade with the nimbleness and proficiency of gods.
He has bruised our collective ego. He has denigrated the art industry; taking it back to the dark ages, when artists are seen as lay about and never “do wells”.
MC Mbakara needs to be dragged out and made to publicly apologise, this time with sincerity of purpose, to the entire art community; because this could become the beginning of a downward slope for artists in this country. This should never ever be allowed to happen again and definitely not in our time.
His purported video apology to the young artist was sinister at best, a lampoon and a travesty; aimed to further infuriate and malign, if watched to the end.
This local roadside comedian who is devoid of every trace of poise, finesse or sophistication essential to apprehending the divine essence of art and aesthetics, has committed a great sacrilege. And he should be told so in black and white.

    I have said this before on different social media platforms.
    And I have paid attention to this issue, first I see that the so called MC mbakara if I am not mistaken.
    Just used the artist to create traffic and draw ppl to us page, now where is the artist, is no where to be found,
    But go online all you see is the MC mbakara…
    Something tells me there’s an agreement between him and the artist to create attention, focus and publicity for MC mbakara page to be on a spotlight ????

    People will be treated in the way they present themselves. The artist started the situation by doing an unsolicited portrait (actually 2 unsolicited portraits). He infringed first on the privacy and space of the MC.
    Now, 2 wrongs do not make a right, MC was wrong to tear the artworks ( ” frames”). But no wrong was committed until the artist did the first wrong.
    If we believe the artist is one of us, then we must first rein on him for bringing our profession to disrepute. His dealings with MC are alleged not to have been noble, but mostly parasitic and beggarly.

    I prefer he Mc mbaraka should probably have return it back to the artist instead of going online to destroy the art work.

    Many things are involved in this matter, the most important is what was the agreement between 2 of them? Written or unwritten
    Expect anything if you do an unsolicited portrait, you can be given a gift in return, I will not use the word pay , the gift can be cash or any other means e.g. mbakara said he shared it on his page, he believe doing so in return the artist gets more popular which is true and there After get more jobs in return but not immediately. The artist may get other things in return this is not payment.
    Mbakara also have the right to tell you to rub it off and ask why you are drawing him and get angry and sue you for doing so and sue you to court for using his face to advertise your product without paying him or seeking his permission before doing so, reasons are unending why you do not do unsolicited portrait, mbakara it neither governor or president whom we are free to do their pictures without question
    Let us be careful and seek legal opinion before dragging mbakara don’t forget he has his own rights.
    As for artist please stop doing unsolicited works and expect payment
    Art is not charity , I do give artworks as gift mostly only to my long time clients who also stood by me in bad times
    I am beyond any celebrities I can not give them free artworks , obas, commissioners chiefs etc , it must be strictly on purchase or commission.
    Let us do seminars and workshops on this issue so that artist can learn from it

      Kehinde Jagun I totally agree with you. After some thorough investigation I was made to understand that by legal rights the artist was supposed to seek the permission of the celeb before drawing them. But since this is not the case, the artist is not obliged to pay him. The only strain on the issue is the fact that the guy broke the work which is very extreme and uncalled for. If from this perspective he is made to apologize for that act it would be fine. Because on this issues he has his rights should this matter go sideways.

        Gabriel Oke Once you fall into the category of a ruler, politician or celebrity, you become a public figure whose face can be photographed, cartooned, drawn, painted or sculpted; without necessarily seeking your permission. You should even consider it a rare privilege to be so honoured by people.
        In the case of this young artist, he was simply seeking clout, not even money; and wanted the video he made with the quasi celebrity during the presentation of the works posted for all his efforts.
        His crude persistence was not enough to warrant the destruction of his works.

    Its really painful and what I see is that he insulted the artists allover the world as if we are piece of rag’s like we are not celebrities too,like we dont know what we are doing. That’s total shit I mist confess

    I think that this issue should not be overstated, when you cast your pearls before swines it will be trampled in the mud, the artist is most likely self trained and for such artists anything to make a quick buck is done, and as for the so called celebrity, he doesn’t even know what he is destroying is called, he called it a “ frame” to the average Nigerian a drawing is called a picture frame ????, but let’s also not forget that most of our so called collectors who we think appreciate art ,just collect to boast and the works end up rotting in their stores.

      Godfrey Williams-Okorodus That is why we are saying. To the street Urchin, the frame is even more valuable than the pencil work. Such clowns are not worthy of gifting free jobs.

        Igbowe Mike Oba my Brother street artists are vital to any society especially in one such as ours where a large chunk of the people live below the poverty line, the simple fact is that the average Nigerian only knows portraits as what artists do.it’s a free market and quacks abound in all professions, those who patronise quacks are themselves not worthy of notice as far as I am concerned.
